Pakistan Reaffirms GSP+ Commitment for Trade and Human Rights
Pakistan has once again affirmed its GSP Plus commitment. The country aims to grow trade ties with the EU while supporting human rights and labour laws.
Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan met with EU Ambassador Raimundas Karoblis in Islamabad. The meeting focused on trade, investment, and shared values under the GSP+ framework.
Focus on Growth and Governance
During the meeting, both sides reviewed the progress of the GSP+ agreement. They also explored new ways to grow bilateral trade and investment.
The minister welcomed the EU’s continued support. He praised the bloc’s role in boosting Pakistan’s exports and compliance with international standards.
For example, GSP+ allows over 76% of Pakistan’s exports to the EU to enter duty-free. This includes major sectors like textiles and garments.
As a result, Pakistan’s exports to the EU have more than doubled since 2014. In 2023, they reached €8 billion, including €2.4 billion to Germany.
This growth has made the EU Pakistan’s largest export destination. Therefore, strengthening ties under GSP+ is vital for the country’s economy. Sustainable Development
Both officials highlighted the importance of human rights, labour standards, and governance. These are key conditions under the GSP+ agreement.
The minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s dedication to meeting United Nations conventions. These include fair labour practices and equal rights protections.
In addition, both sides discussed the upcoming EU-Pakistan Business Forum. The event aims to boost investment and long-term cooperation.
The EU and Pakistan also agreed to continue working together for mutual growth. They stressed that economic progress must go hand in hand with ethical practices.
This renewed commitment shows Pakistan’s focus on building trust, transparency, and a sustainable economy.
