Pakistan is pushing for major railway upgrades to boost connectivity and trade. Minister of State for Finance and Railways Bilal Azhar Kayani outlined these plans at the Global Rail Conference in Abu Dhabi.
The event, held from September 30 to October 2, 2025, gathered ministers, policymakers, and rail industry leaders. They discussed the role of modern transport in sustainable development.
Pakistan’s Vision for Connectivity
Speaking on a ministerial panel, Kayani stressed the link between infrastructure and prosperity. He noted that efficient transport systems can drive growth, create jobs, and strengthen integration.
The minister also shared Pakistan’s achievements in road infrastructure, including expanded motorways. However, he emphasized that rail upgrades remain vital for long-term growth.
Plans are already underway to modernize the ML-1 and ML-3 railway corridors. These upgrades will align Pakistan’s rail network with international standards and support regional trade.
Partnerships and Innovation
On the sidelines, Kayani met with Etihad Rail CEO Shadi Malak. Both sides discussed cooperation in freight logistics, technology sharing, and network development.
In addition, Kayani toured exhibition stalls of Etihad Rail and Hafeet Rail. He reviewed innovations in regional rail systems and explored opportunities for collaboration.
Pakistan’s focus on rail modernization reflects a broader vision of sustainable infrastructure. As a result, the country aims to strengthen economic links while promoting environmentally friendly transport.
The Abu Dhabi summit served as a platform for Pakistan to present its commitment to building connected, greener, and future-ready transport networks.
