Pakistan Senate Debates Jail Meetings, Child Social Media Safety

The Pakistan Senate debated two critical issues on Friday. PTI lawmakers protested
being denied a meeting with their party founder. Separately, senators raised alarms about children’s social media use.
PTI Senator Ali Zafar initiated the protest on the floor. He demanded the government facilitate a meeting with Imran Khan. He claimed the denial was a form of political victimization. Senator Falak Naz Chitrali supported him with a serious allegation.
She stated the PTI founder was being held in solitary confinement. This claim prompted PTI members to stage a loud protest. They insisted on their right to a legal and political consultation.

Law Minister Clarifies Jail Protocols

Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar responded to the protests directly. He explained the jail superintendent holds the authority to permit visits. This decision depends largely on the prisoner’s behavior and conduct.
He further clarified that Adiala Jail is under Punjab’s government. Therefore, the federal government cannot issue direct orders about it. The minister then firmly rejected the solitary confinement allegation.
He assured the Senate the former prime minister is in good health. He receives meals of his choice and has all necessary facilities. The minister urged lawmakers to trust the established prison procedures.

Cross-Ministry Committee on Social Media

Another significant discussion focused on child safety online. A submitted notice highlighted excessive, unsupervised social media use by children. Federal Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry labeled the issue as extremely important.
He argued it warrants a discussion at the national level. Presiding officer Sherry Rehman acknowledged the complexity of the matter. She noted it involves multiple ministries, including IT and law.
Therefore, she suggested forming a special committee for it. This committee would gather input from all relevant ministries. The goal is to create effective safeguards for young internet users.
The session also included solemn and procedural moments. Lawmakers observed silence for victims of an Islamabad gas leak. Newly-elected PML-N Senator Abid Sher Ali also took his oath of office.
These debates show the Senate’s focus on both political and social governance. The government faces pressure on judicial access and digital citizen safety. Officials are now tasked with addressing these public concerns directly.
