Pakistan smart lockdown plan to tackle fuel crisis

Pakistan smart lockdown plan to tackle fuel crisis

Pakistan is preparing a nationwide Pakistan smart lockdown to manage its growing fuel crisis. Officials plan to combine targeted restrictions with austerity steps to reduce energy use. The move comes as global oil prices rise and economic pressure increases.
Authorities expect to announce the plan after final consultations. Moreover, they want to keep economic activity running while lowering fuel and electricity demand.

Targeted restrictions and hybrid work

The Pakistan smart lockdown will introduce limits on public activity. Markets and shopping malls will close at 9:30 pm. Wedding halls will allow only 200 guests and follow a one-dish policy, closing by 10 pm.
Officials aim to reduce large gatherings and save energy at night. In addition, the plan includes a hybrid work model for offices. Government departments will adopt flexible schedules with both in-office and remote work.
A 50% staff rota will also reduce commuting. Authorities will use digital tools to monitor attendance and ensure compliance. Similarly, private offices may adopt remote work for up to half of their staff.

Energy savings and economic measures

Energy conservation remains central to the Pakistan smart lockdown. Offices may not use air conditioners before 10:30 am. In addition, the government plans to shift many public buildings to solar energy within 60 days.
Officials have also proposed strict limits on official vehicle use. For example, they may impose penalties or recover fuel costs for misuse. Shared transport for senior staff is also under review.
Meanwhile, broader economic steps are under discussion. These include reducing fuel and electricity allowances and adjusting taxes on property and vehicles. Lower railway fares may encourage people to use public transport.
Rising global oil prices have increased Pakistan’s import burden. As a result, the country faces pressure on reserves and its current account. Therefore, officials see this plan as a necessary step to stabilise the situation.
