PBS Survey Gains Highlight Progress in Education, Health, and Digital Access
Pakistan has shown steady improvement in key social sectors, according to PBS survey gains in the latest Household Economic Survey. The national literacy rate has reached 63 percent. This marks a three-point increase over the past five years. Therefore, more people can now read and write than before.
Punjab leads the country with a literacy rate of 68 percent. Meanwhile, Balochistan continues to trail at 49 percent. However, education access has improved nationwide. The share of out-of-school children dropped from 30 percent to 28 percent. As a result, more children now attend school.
Education and Digital Growth
Digital access has expanded rapidly across the country. Household internet access surged from 34 percent to 70 percent. Consequently, families can now connect more easily to online services. The number of internet users also increased from 17 percent to 57 percent.
Mobile access shows even stronger progress. About 96 percent of households now own a mobile phone or smartphone. In addition, this access supports education, work, and communication. For example, students can attend online classes and access learning tools.
Despite regional gaps, digital growth offers new opportunities. Therefore, technology can help reduce education inequality over time. Inclusive access remains key to long-term progress.
Health Improvements and Living Patterns
Health indicators also show positive change. Full immunization coverage rose from 68 percent to 73 percent. As a result, more children now receive vital protection. Neonatal mortality declined from 41 to 35 per 1,000 live births.
Infant mortality also dropped significantly. It fell from 60 to 47 per 1,000 live births. These gains reflect better healthcare access and awareness.
The survey also tracked food consumption. People consume wheat, rice, milk, eggs, potatoes, and sugar each month. Urban households consume more sugar than rural ones. Therefore, dietary patterns still vary by location.
Overall, PBS survey gains highlight steady social progress. Continued focus can help sustain these positive trends.
