Peer Mohammad Shah Reinstated as DIG Traffic Karachi After Gul Plaza Fire

Senior police officer Peer Mohammad Shah has returned as DIG Traffic Karachi. Authorities restored him to the post weeks after removing him following the Gul Plaza fire. The government issued an official notification on Saturday to confirm the decision. Officials also withdrew the additional charge from Mazhar Nawaz Shaikh. He had taken over the role after Shah’s removal. Now, Shah resumes full responsibility for traffic operations in the city.

Background of the Gul Plaza Fire

Authorities removed Shah after the tragic Gul Plaza fire. The blaze claimed 79 lives and destroyed more than 1,000 shops. As a result, the incident sparked widespread criticism across Karachi. Many people questioned the emergency response and traffic management. The commercial area faced severe congestion during rescue efforts.
Critics argued that poor coordination delayed relief operations. Sources said officials relieved Shah over alleged traffic mismanagement during the crisis. However, authorities did not file any public explanation at that time. The decision drew mixed reactions from the public and within police circles.

Notification Confirms Return

The latest notification confirms Shah’s reinstatement as DIG Traffic Karachi. Meanwhile, officials have not shared specific reasons for restoring him to the position. Therefore, speculation continues about the factors behind the move. Mazhar Nawaz Shaikh will no longer hold the additional charge. The department expects a smoother traffic management system under the renewed leadership. In addition, officials aim to strengthen coordination during emergencies.
Karachi often struggles with heavy congestion and complex traffic challenges. Effective leadership remains crucial for public safety. Consequently, many citizens will watch closely to see how the department performs in the coming months.
