PIA Cargo Partnership Expands Global Network with Air France–KLM
Pakistan International Airlines has secured a major PIA cargo partnership with Air France–KLM. The agreement strengthens its global freight reach. It also comes during a period of major institutional change for the national carrier.
The cargo deal took effect on January 15. Under the agreement, PIA Cargo gains access to the Air France–KLM global network. Therefore, exporters can now ship goods across Europe and the United States using a single air waybill.
This unified system simplifies logistics. It also reduces handling time for international consignments. As a result, exporters benefit from smoother cargo movement.
Stronger Freight Connectivity Through Global Hubs
PIA Cargo will connect to the wider network through regional hubs. These hubs include Dubai, Riyadh, and Dammam. From there, shipments can reach major European and US destinations.
Key cities include Amsterdam, Paris, Brussels, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, and Düsseldorf. In addition, the network now covers New York, Atlanta, and Los Angeles. This expansion improves access to high-value trade routes.
The partnership supports PIA’s broader recovery strategy. For example, the airline recently resumed direct flights between Islamabad and Paris. These flights began on January 10 and operate twice weekly.
French Ambassador Nicolas Galey welcomed the development. He said the route reflects stronger ties between Pakistan and Europe. He also noted that the partnership offers links to around 21 European destinations.
Privatization Marks a New Chapter for PIA
The cargo expansion coincides with the completion of PIA’s privatization. In late January, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif attended the signing ceremony in Islamabad. The government transferred a 75 percent stake to the Arif Habib Consortium.
The prime minister described the process as transparent and competitive. He expressed confidence in the airline’s future under private management. Therefore, expectations remain high for service improvement and growth.
The PIA cargo partnership, renewed European routes, and private ownership signal a renewed focus. Together, they aim to strengthen trade, travel, and global connectivity.
