PIA Revenue Loss Rs200bn Linked to Fake Pilot License Scandal
PIA Revenue Loss Rs200bn shocked lawmakers during a Senate session on Tuesday. Officials said Pakistan International Airlines lost nearly Rs200 billion between August 2020 and December 2024. The losses followed the fake pilot license scandal that damaged the airline’s global reputation.
The Ministry of Defence shared the figures in a written reply during Question Hour. Lawmakers reviewed the financial impact and discussed aviation challenges. As a result, debate quickly shifted toward flight operations in Balochistan.
Airports in Balochistan Face Closure
Senators from Balochistan protested over inactive airports in the province. They raised concerns about the absence of regular flights. Therefore, the session saw strong demands for urgent action.
Officials informed the House that Balochistan has 11 airports. However, only Quetta International Airport, Gwadar International Airport, and Turbat International Airport currently operate commercial flights.
Dalbandin Airport lacks a runway. Meanwhile, Zhob, Pasni, and Panjgur airports remain operational but closed due to suspended flights. Authorities have also shut Khuzdar and Sibi airports because airlines do not operate routes there.
Ormara and Jiwani airports have remained closed since 2004. Since 2005, the Pakistan Navy has managed both facilities under a memorandum of understanding.
Government Promises Review
Minister of State Shaza Mansab Ali Khan told the Senate that commercial flights in Balochistan do not attract enough passengers. She explained that airlines cannot sustain routes without financial viability.
A senator from Balochistan strongly protested this position. In response, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar assured lawmakers that officials would arrange a meeting with PIA management. The government aims to explore practical solutions to restore flight operations in the province.Lawmakers now await concrete steps to address regional air connectivity concerns.
