Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has voiced serious concern over the rising violence in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). The unrest has left at least nine people dead, including three policemen, during ongoing demonstrations. The protests are being led by the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC).
Violence Erupts Amid Demands for Reform
The JAAC has been demanding constitutional and governance reforms in the region. Demonstrations quickly turned violent, leading to clashes between security forces and protesters. Officials confirmed that casualties included both civilians and law enforcement personnel.
Protesters say they want reforms to ensure fair governance and economic justice. They also stress that long-standing issues, including resource distribution, remain unresolved. The growing violence has heightened public fears across AJK.
PM Shehbaz Urges Calm
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed sorrow over the loss of lives. He appealed for restraint from both sides, calling for dialogue instead of confrontation. He emphasized that political and constitutional concerns must be addressed through peaceful discussion.
The premier also directed authorities to maintain law and order while safeguarding citizens’ rights. He said that his government remains committed to listening to the people of AJK. In addition, he assured that reforms will be considered in consultation with all stakeholders.
Civil society groups and political parties have also called for an immediate end to violence. Human rights advocates urged authorities to avoid excessive force and focus on resolving grievances through negotiation.
The unrest in AJK reflects deep frustrations among citizens seeking accountability and change. However, leaders on all sides face growing pressure to prevent further bloodshed and restore peace.
