Pokémon Champions Free-to-Play Game Launches April 8 on Switch

Pokémon Champions Free-to-Play Game Launches April 8 on Switch

The Pokémon Company confirms Pokémon Champions will release on April 8, 2026, for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2. Pokémon Champions release date arrives just two weeks after the announcement, with the base game free to play. A starter pack bundle offers paid upgrades with in-game benefits including added Pokémon storage space. An extra battle song and other perks come with the starter pack bundle. The Switch 2 version will receive a free graphics enhancement update. The mobile version release date has not yet been confirmed. The game was first revealed during the Pokémon Day 2025 livestream. More details emerged during the Pokémon Day 2026 event earlier this year.

What to Expect from Champions

The game narrows its focus to battle strategy rather than traditional exploration. This differentiates it from typical mainline Pokémon games significantly. Competitive play debuts at the Indianapolis Regional Champions from May 29-31. Pokémon Champions will serve as the primary platform for VGC at all Premier Events.
Later events include the Turin Special Champions in June this year. The North America International Championships also happen in June. The Pokémon World Championships follow in August for top competitors. The game positions itself as the new competitive battleground for trainers.

Filling the Gap Until Gen 10

Generation 10 arrives with Pokémon Winds and Waves in 2027. Until then, Champions offers competitive players something substantial. Pokémon Pokopia launched recently for Switch 2 owners as a life simulation alternative. Champions reaches a much wider audience with cross-generation and mobile availability.
Fans of Pokémon Stadium and Battle Revolution should find familiar gameplay here. The free-to-play status raises questions about monetization balance. Hopefully free and paid players both enjoy the experience. Two weeks is a short wait for eager Pokémon battlers.
