Punjab Launches Informer Reward Scheme to Curb Illegal Hunting

Punjab has launched a new informer reward scheme to tackle illegal hunting across the province. The move follows direct instructions from the Chief Minister. Authorities aim to involve citizens in protecting animals and fragile ecosystems.

Public Role and Cash Incentives

The Punjab Wildlife Department introduced the initiative as its first campaign of this kind. It invites residents to share credible information about unlawful hunting activities. In return, officials promise cash incentives after successful action.
Department officials confirmed that teams will verify every tip. Once enforcement succeeds, the contributor will receive an officially approved reward. Therefore, the system focuses on accuracy and accountability.
The campaign targets secretive practices like net trapping and night-time hunting. It also covers poaching that often goes unnoticed in remote areas. As a result, authorities hope to close enforcement gaps.

Rewards Based on Species and Violations

Officials announced a clear reward structure to guide the public. Verified information on the endangered Great Indian Bustard carries a reward of Rs100,000. This amount reflects the species’ critical conservation status.
Tips related to illegal hunting of urial and deer qualify for Rs50,000. Meanwhile, authorities will pay Rs25,000 for confirmed cases involving the Houbara Bustard. These amounts aim to discourage high-risk violations.
The department has also fixed Rs10,000 for reports on net trapping and illegal night hunting. This category includes partridges, peacocks, quails, and waterfowl. In addition, tips about unlawful hunting of wild rabbits and partridges will earn Rs5,000.
Officials stressed that public cooperation remains vital for success. They urged people to report violations responsibly and safely. Through shared effort, the province hopes to preserve biodiversity and protect future generations.
