Punjab Launches Second Phase of Lahore Development Plan to Upgrade 6,284 Streets
Punjab has launched Phase II of the Lahore development plan, marking another major step in the city’s urban upgrade. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif inaugurated the phase during a meeting that reviewed the progress of ongoing projects. In addition, she stressed that delays or compromises in quality would not be acceptable.
Massive Citywide Street Upgrades
Under the new phase, authorities will upgrade 6,284 streets by June 30 next year. Out of these, the Municipal Corporation Lahore will modernize 5,798 streets. WASA will upgrade another 486 streets as part of its improvement drive. As a result, many neighborhoods will see major enhancements in daily mobility and sanitation.
Maryam Nawaz said that every part of Lahore deserves restoration with dignity. She added that the project would bring visible improvements to communities across the provincial capital. Upgrading more than 6,000 streets, she noted, will turn many local areas into symbols of pride for residents.
Broad Impact Across the City
MCL and WASA are jointly executing the Lahore Development Plan. Together, they cover nine zones and 274 union councils. Their work supports nearly 13 million people living in the city. In addition, the project aligns with key Sustainable Development Goals through its focus on public health, clean water, safe communities, and climate action.
The plan includes new sewerage lines to reduce urban flooding. Better sanitation systems will also lower public health risks, which many communities have faced for years. Improved street networks will enhance daily travel for both residents and visitors. Therefore, officials expect long-term benefits for mobility, safety, and overall quality of life.
The government believes these upgrades will shape a modern and resilient Lahore. With continued monitoring and transparent management, the city aims to set a higher standard for urban development across Pakistan.
