Punjab Petrol Hoarding Crackdown After Fuel Price Hike

Punjab Petrol Hoarding Crackdown After Fuel Price Hike

The Punjab government has ordered a petrol hoarding crackdown after a sudden fuel price hike sparked public anger. Several petrol pumps closed before the price increase and later sold fuel at higher rates. As a result, many pump owners reportedly earned huge profits overnight. Authorities now plan strict action against those who created artificial shortages.

Punjab Launches Petrol Hoarding Crackdown

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz directed authorities to act against hoarders and profiteers. She ordered the Punjab Enforcement and Regulatory Authority to start province-wide inspections. Officials will monitor fuel stations and check supply levels.
According to the government, some petrol pumps stopped selling fuel before the new prices took effect. They resumed sales after midnight and earned large profits. Therefore, the administration decided to launch the petrol hoarding crackdown across Punjab.
Authorities warned that strict penalties will follow violations. For example, officials will seal pumps involved in hoarding or profiteering. In addition, regulators will cancel licences of stations that break the rules.
Officials also fear panic buying across major cities. Long queues have already appeared at several fuel stations in Lahore. Therefore, regulators continue monitoring supply and prices closely.

Public Anger Grows After Fuel Price Hike

The government recently raised petrol and diesel prices by Rs55 per litre. Officials linked the increase to global market changes and regional tensions. In particular, concerns about the Strait of Hormuz raised fears about supply disruptions.
However, many citizens criticised the decision. Motorists say higher fuel prices will push up the cost of transport and daily goods. As a result, people worry about another wave of inflation.
Business leaders also expressed concern. The Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry urged the government to consult traders. Representatives warned that higher fuel prices may increase production costs.
They also suggested targeted subsidies for low-income families. Experts believe strong monitoring and fair pricing will help restore public confidence. Meanwhile, authorities continue the petrol hoarding crackdown to control shortages and protect consumers.
