Punjab Smog Crackdown: Traffic Police Target Smoke-Emitting Vehicles

Punjab has intensified its efforts to fight air pollution through a province-wide Punjab smog crackdown. Traffic authorities have increased inspections, enforcement, and penalties on smoke-emitting vehicles. As a result, the campaign has gained strong momentum in recent weeks.
The drive began under the directions of Punjab DIG Traffic Muhammad Waqas Nazir. Officials report that enforcement activity grew sharply during the past three weeks. In this period, traffic teams imposed fines worth more than Rs174.9 million on vehicles releasing toxic smoke. In addition, the department recorded a major 116% rise in action compared to earlier phases of the campaign.
Authorities issued over 87,000 tickets this month to drivers of smoke-emitting vehicles. They also suspended fitness certificates of 41 vehicles and cancelled route permits of more than 35 others. Furthermore, police registered 24 FIRs and impounded over 13,000 harmful vehicles across the province.

Strict Action Against Dust-Producing Vehicles

Traffic authorities also targeted vehicles transporting sand and soil without proper covers. These vehicles add dangerous dust particles to the air. Therefore, teams issued heavy fines to more than 5,000 such offenders. DIG Muhammad Waqas Nazir said every violator faces a Rs2,000 penalty along with strict legal action.
He urged the public to support the campaign by maintaining their vehicles. According to him, poorly tuned engines release poisonous smoke that contributes to respiratory diseases. He stressed that reducing toxic emissions is essential for protecting both public health and the environment.

Officials Praise Traffic Police Performance

Additional Punjab IG Traffic praised the performance of traffic police teams. He said they continue to deliver excellent results in enforcing smog-related regulations. In addition, he reaffirmed that government directives on smog control are being implemented with full commitment. Authorities plan to expand the campaign to ensure cleaner air for all communities.
The Punjab smog crackdown shows the government’s firm resolve to reduce pollution and safeguard the environment.
