Qom Embarks on Major Cultural Heritage and Tourism Development in Iran

Qom province in Iran is entering a new stage of cultural heritage and tourism development. With over 8,000 years of civilization, it holds immense historical attractions. Authorities have significantly increased credits for this sector. Provincial acquisition credits have also tripled recently.

Biggest Opportunity in Years

Behzad Ahmadi-Farsani, head of Qom’s Cultural Heritage Department, shared the news with ILNA. He called the budget increase the biggest opportunity in recent years. The funds will develop infrastructure, museums, and tourism areas. They will also support the handicrafts sector. Major initiatives have started in the past five months. Some projects had not been implemented in the last 20 years.

Comprehensive Tourism Plan Underway

The department is developing a comprehensive tourism plan for Qom. The University of Isfahan is working on this project. Within six to seven months, the province will have a clear development path. This plan will consider territorial planning and various capacities. It will also create cooperation between heritage, tourism, and handicrafts.

New Museum to Display 11,000 Artifacts

One main challenge has been the lack of a suitable museum. About 11,000 historical objects were kept in storage without display. Therefore, the ministry purchased a three-story building near the holy shrine. It is currently being renovated. The museum is expected to open by May.
Officials are also negotiating with the municipality for land. They want a 6,500-meter site for an administration building and handicraft market.

Largest Tourism Project Announced

The province’s largest tourism project is now being implemented. A sample tourism area is planned next to the Tehran-Qom Freeway Toll Booth. Out of 100 hectares of land, 30 hectares will host the tourism zone. The remaining 70 hectares will feature various facilities. These include health tourism, hotels, and pilgrimage centers. Horse riding, aquariums, and rally events are also planned.

Promoting Qom’s Attractions

Qom has very high tourism capacities compared to other Iranian provinces. Deyr-e Gachin caravanserai and Safavid caravanserais are unique attractions. Two weeks ago, famous bloggers with 40 million followers visited these sites. They created content to promote the province’s heritage. The goal is to attract domestic and foreign tourists. This will also facilitate investment in the tourism sector.

Exploring Ancient Historical Sites

Excavations are ongoing at several ancient hills. Qoli Darvish Hill dates back 8,000 years. Khavar Hill is 5,000 years old. Sarv Hill is between 2,000 and 3,000 years old. Some sites belong to the Endowment Organization. A memorandum of understanding will help acquire these lands. The aim is to create archaeological museums and display historical layers.

Preserving Cultural Identity

For the first time, officials are focusing on provincial celebrities. They want to honor figures like Parvin Etesami and Dr. Gharib. This will help introduce Qom’s cultural identity. Qom also has a productive architectural style. Timche Farsh, one of the largest three-arch timchehs in the Middle East, needs restoration. Owner participation is essential to preserve this heritage.

Nowruz 2026 Preparations

Nowruz trips are approaching fast. Qom province has planned special programs for Nowruz 1405 (March 2026). The slogan is “national identity – religious identity.” Carnivals will move through the streets. Nowruzgah sites will be held in historical textures and caravanserais. These events are part of a year-long plan to boost tourism and culture.
