Record Geomagnetic Superstorm Crushed Earth’s Plasma Shield, Scientists Reveal
A huge geomagnetic superstorm in May 2024 gave scientists an extraordinary view of how Earth’s plasmasphere reacts under extreme solar pressure. The event allowed researchers to watch the plasma shield shrink to a tiny fraction of its normal size. As a result, recovery took more than four days and affected navigation and communication systems.
What Makes a Superstorm So Powerful?
Geomagnetic superstorms happen when the Sun blasts Earth with intense bursts of energy. These events are rare and usually occur every 20 to 25 years. However, the May 2024 storm, often called the Mother’s Day storm, was the strongest in more than two decades.A team led by Dr. Atsuki Shinbori from Nagoya University studied the event using data from the Arase satellite. Their findings offer new insight into how the plasmasphere and ionosphere respond to extreme solar activity.
Arase Satellite Captures a Historic Compression
The Arase satellite travels through the plasmasphere, making it the perfect observer. During the storm, it recorded the plasmasphere collapsing from about 44,000 km to only 9,600 km. In addition, it captured the slow, four-day recovery,the longest ever recorded since 2017.
Auroras Spread Far Beyond Polar Regions
The storm compressed Earth’s magnetic field so strongly that auroras appeared in unusual places. People in Japan, Mexico, and southern Europe saw rare red and green skies. These displays formed because charged particles reached much lower latitudes than normal.
A “negative storm” slowed the plasmasphere’s refill. This event changed atmospheric chemistry and reduced the particles needed to rebuild the plasma layer. The disruption affected satellites, GPS accuracy, and radio signals for days.
The study improves forecasting for space weather and helps scientists protect satellites during future extreme events.
