Rs13 Billion Approved for Armed Forces Cardiology Expansion in Pakistan
The federal government has approved Rs13 billion for Armed Forces Cardiology expansion in Rawalpindi.
The project will strengthen cardiac care facilities at the Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology and the National Institute of Heart Diseases. This decision aims to improve access to heart treatment across the country. As a result, both civilian and military patients will benefit from upgraded services.
Funding Plan and Key Decisions
The approval came during an ECNEC meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar. However, the government will fund the project through savings from slow-moving PSDP schemes. Out of the total cost, Rs6 billion will come from foreign financing.
In addition, Rs10.5 billion will support construction work. The remaining funds will cover consultancy services and emergency needs. Therefore, officials expect smooth execution without new financial pressure.
Current Capacity and Health Needs
AFIC currently treats far more patients than its designed capacity. Meanwhile, federal level cardiac facilities remain limited nationwide. The institute serves both civilians and armed forces personnel. Because of this, the expansion has become a national healthcare priority. For the ongoing fiscal year, the government allocated Rs50 million. Moreover, authorities estimate Rs2 billion will be required during the year.
Other Major Projects Approved
Earlier, planning officials suggested alternative funding due to fiscal challenges. However, the deputy prime minister insisted on arranging funds within the PSDP. During the same meeting, ECNEC approved the Prime Minister Youth Skill Development Program.
The initiative will run from 2023 to 2027 with a budget of Rs23.5 billion. In addition, ECNEC approved the revised cost of the Karachi Yellow Line BRT project. The project will cost Rs178.5 billion and receive World Bank financing. The 21-kilometer corridor will include 28 stations and 256 buses. As a result, it will serve nearly 300,000 passengers daily.
