Safe City Project Theft in Karachi: Stolen Boxes Near Bilawal House Raise Security Concerns

A major safe city project theft occurred near Bilawal House in Karachi. Thieves stole distribution boxes installed for the city’s surveillance cameras. The theft has raised serious questions about the project’s security measures.
Director General Safe Cities Authority Asif Ijaz Sheikh confirmed the theft. He said the boxes supported cameras near Bilawal House Chowrangi. After discovering the incident, authorities switched off the cameras and removed them from poles to prevent further damage.

Authorities Secure Cameras After Theft

The theft happened during Phase 1 of the Safe City project. This phase aimed to install 1,300 cameras in Karachi by November 30. However, thieves struck before the project’s completion.
Officials stated that the stolen boxes also affected the e-challan system. District police handled the cameras’ protection. The DG held meetings with zonal DIGs to review and improve security. He said, “The theft from the Safe City project is deeply concerning.”

Police Investigate the Incident

DIG South Asad Raza said the stolen cameras and boxes lacked an alarm system. This gap made it hard to identify when the theft took place. Investigators are now checking nearby CCTV footage and eyewitness reports to trace the suspects.
Eyewitnesses saw individuals in a vehicle removing the heavy boxes. The Safe City team informed police on November 6. At that time, the cameras were inactive. DIG Raza confirmed that police teams continue to investigate and recover the missing equipment.
