Save Big on Your Next Trip with Destination Dupes

Save Big on Your Next Trip with Destination Dupes

Looking for a way to save money on your next vacation? A destination dupe may be just what you need. These are lesser-known, affordable travel spots. They offer the same charm as famous destinations. However, they come without the expensive price tags.
If this sounds appealing, you are not alone. A Bank of America Institute study found that 92% of travelers are open to visiting a dupe. Millennials are especially interested. In fact, 62% would pick a more affordable option over popular destinations.

Why Choose a Dupe?

Viola Sender co-founded the travel blog Away to the City. She uses destination dupes to travel more often. “My husband and I travel three to four months a year,” she said. “Dupes are the main reason we can afford that.” She focuses on the feeling a place gives you. Walkable streets, good food, or a laid-back vibe matter most. You don’t need a fortune for that experience.
Cheaper costs are a big draw. However, travelers also want to escape crowds. They seek relaxed vacations and hidden gems.

7 Affordable Destination Dupes

For New York City

Travel expert Taima Ramsey recommends Chicago or Mexico City. “Chicago offers skyline views and amazing food,” she said. It is way more budget-friendly and manageable. Mexico City has nonstop energy and creative scenes. Your money goes much further there.

For London

Ramsey suggests Boston for London lovers. “You still get the history and walkable neighborhoods,” she explained. You will spend less but enjoy just as much personality.

For Paris

Head to Savannah, Georgia for Parisian romance. “It’s romantic, walkable, and full of character,” Ramsey said. You get beauty and soul with a Southern twist.

For Rome

Skip Rome and visit Verona instead. The Arena immediately reminds you of the Colosseum. The city has timeless charm but is quieter and more affordable.

For Tokyo

Taipei is a great alternative to Tokyo. “Prices and crowds are skyrocketing in Japan,” said Sender. Taipei offers similar city buzz and amazing food. It is way more affordable and less intense.

For Amsterdam

Try Ghent in Belgium for Amsterdam vibes. “It has pretty medieval streets and canals,” Sender noted. It feels more relaxed and much easier on the wallet.

For San Francisco

Lisbon in Portugal mirrors San Francisco perfectly. It has iconic street trolleys and steep streets. You will enjoy fresh seafood at prices unseen in the Bay Area for decades.

The Bottom Line

Popular cities like New York and London are pricey and crowded. Destination dupes offer much lower costs. They have fewer crowds and vibrant cultures to explore.
