Shalimar Express Upgrade Impresses Passengers but Concerns Over Facilities Remain
The Shalimar Express upgrade has attracted huge interest in Karachi. The revamped train saw over 900 passengers on its first trip, achieving full occupancy. However, many travellers feel the service still lacks the comfort offered by the Green Line Train.
New Facilities at the Station
Railway officials explained that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif inaugurated the upgraded station. Two CIP lounges are now available, and teams restored three historic waiting halls. These areas serve both economy and family-class passengers.
In addition, QR codes help visitors navigate the station and share feedback. Passengers now have access to information desks, a modern announcement system and real-time train tracking screens. Authorities hope these upgrades create a smoother travel experience.
The Shalimar Express features AC Business, AC Parlour, Lower AC and Economy class coaches. Pakistan Railways spokesperson Babar Ali Raza said a private company now manages the service under a public–private partnership. This partnership could generate up to two billion rupees each year.
The train leaves Karachi at 6:30pm and completes its journey in 19 hours. The first day’s booking filled two days before departure, showing clear public demand. Officials expect around 1,800 passengers to travel daily.
Passenger Concerns and Future Plans
Despite the excitement, several travellers reported issues. Sudden platform changes at Karachi Cantt caused confusion, especially for women and families. Some passengers also pointed out dim lighting, uncomfortable seating and poor food quality. They said better fans and cleaner spaces would improve the journey.
Railway officials urged the public to avoid damaging trains out of frustration. They explained that such actions reduce the quality of services for everyone.
While the Shalimar Express upgrade marks important progress, authorities still face the challenge of meeting rising expectations for comfort and reliability.
