The Sindh government is fast-tracking plans to launch Pakistan’s first state-run electric vehicle (EV) taxi service. Officials expect a formal rollout by December this year.
A Landmark Initiative
The project was discussed in a meeting chaired by Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon on Monday. Key officials, including Secretary Transport Asad Zamin and Sindh Mass Transit Authority MD Kanwal Nizam Bhutto, shared updates on ongoing schemes.
Minister Memon said Sindh would become the first province to launch a government-run taxi fleet powered by EVs. He called it a personal priority for Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, who wants modern, safe, and eco-friendly transport for the public.
Though the statement did not confirm the launch city, sources suggest Karachi will host the first rollout.
Focus on Women’s Mobility
In the first phase, a section of the EV taxis will be reserved for women. The plan builds on Sindh’s gender-sensitive transport efforts. For example, the Pink Bus Service and Pink Scooty scheme have already expanded safe travel options for female commuters and students.
Broader Transport Transformation
The EV taxis form part of a larger mobility shift in Sindh. The popular Peoples Bus Service has grown into a key urban transport option in Karachi, Hyderabad, and Larkana. Affordable fares, reliable routes, and air-conditioned buses have boosted accessibility across cities.
The government has also introduced EV buses and announced double-decker buses for busy corridors. In addition, work is under way to build EV charging stations to ensure sustainability.
Sindh officials believe these steps will reduce pollution while modernising public transport across the province.
