Sofia Welcomes New Škoda Metro Trains for Faster, Greener Travel
Sofia is upgrading its metro system with new Škoda trains. The city aims to offer faster, greener, and more comfortable rides for everyone.
Eight modern four-car trains will join the network under a €66 million project. The first train is set to arrive in November 2025, with full operation expected by spring 2026. These trains will serve metro lines 1, 2, and 4, giving commuters and tourists a smoother experience.
Comfort Meets Innovation
The new trains come packed with features designed for convenience. Each one includes efficient air conditioning, wider doors, and barrier-free boarding. There are also dedicated spaces for wheelchair users. Therefore, every passenger can travel comfortably, regardless of mobility needs.
In addition, the trains use regenerative braking and modern traction motors. This technology saves energy and reduces carbon emissions. Automatic speed control keeps rides safe while maintaining efficiency. Their top speed reaches an impressive 90 km/h.
A Step Toward a Smarter City
Sofia’s metro already serves about 400,000 passengers daily. With these upgrades, capacity will rise and waiting times will drop. As a result, fewer people may rely on cars, reducing congestion across the city.
Production takes place in the Czech Republic, where testing is already underway. Once complete, these sleek trains will mark a major step toward cleaner and smarter urban mobility.
Public transport improvements like this not only help the environment but also make everyday travel more enjoyable. Both locals and visitors can look forward to faster journeys and a more sustainable Sofia.
