Sound Machines Harm Sleep, Earplugs Are Better, Study Finds

Your sound machine might hurt your sleep. New research reveals a shocking truth. Pink noise can actually reduce vital REM sleep. Scientists from the University of Pennsylvania made this discovery. They published their findings in the journal Sleep. Therefore, many popular sleep aids could backfire.

Earplugs Outperform Sound Machines

The study tested several sleep conditions. Researchers compared pink noise, traffic sounds, and earplugs. They monitored 25 healthy adults in a sleep lab.The results were clear. Earplugs effectively protected deep sleep from noise. However, pink noise significantly reduced REM sleep on its own.

Why REM Sleep Is So Important

REM sleep is crucial for your brain. It helps with memory consolidation and emotional regulation. This stage is especially important for brain development.Deep sleep aids physical recovery and mental clarity. Both stages are essential for waking up refreshed. Disrupting them can harm your well-being.

The Problem with Pink Noise

Pink noise is a type of broadband sound. It includes white noise and similar constant sounds. Many people use it to mask disruptive noises. The study played it at 50 decibels. This volume is similar to moderate rainfall. Unfortunately, it cut nearly 19 minutes of REM sleep per night.Combining it with traffic noise was worse. Participants lost more deep sleep and spent extra time awake. Their reported sleep quality also dropped.

A Warning for Parents and Children

Lead author Dr. Mathias Basner issued a strong caution. Children need more REM sleep than adults for development. Therefore, they may be more sensitive to disruption. Many parents use sound machines for babies and toddlers. This common practice may unintentionally do harm. The researchers urge more public awareness.
This study supports using basic earplugs. They are a low-tech, effective solution for noise. In contrast, marketed sleep sounds may create new problems. Always consult a doctor for chronic sleep issues. Furthermore, more research on long-term noise use is needed. Your best sleep might come from simple silence.
