South Sudan President Fires Vice-President Benjamin Bol Mel Amid Rising Tensions

South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir has dismissed Vice-President Benjamin Bol Mel in a surprise move. Bol Mel was once seen as Kiir’s possible successor, but his removal signals growing divisions within the country’s leadership.
In addition, Kiir stripped Bol Mel of his military rank of general and expelled him from the national security service. The president also fired the central bank governor and the head of the revenue authority, both known to be close allies of Bol Mel.

Sudden Shake-up Raises Questions

The dismissals were announced through a presidential decree aired on state television. However, the government did not give any explanation for the decision.
Political observers say the move reflects deepening power struggles within South Sudan’s ruling elite. The firings come as tensions rise over the collapse of a fragile power-sharing deal between Kiir and opposition leader Riek Machar.

Growing Fears of Instability

As a result, many fear the country could slide back into civil conflict. The peace agreement, once seen as a path toward stability, now appears to be falling apart.
For many citizens, the leadership crisis adds to everyday hardships in a nation already facing economic struggles and insecurity. Analysts warn that without dialogue, the political uncertainty could worsen in the coming months.
South Sudan’s future remains uncertain as leaders continue to battle for power in one of the world’s youngest and most fragile nations.
