Starlink Vietnam license expands satellite internet access
Vietnam has approved the Starlink Vietnam license for satellite internet services.
As a result, the country may soon see faster connections in remote areas. The radio frequency regulator allowed the company to begin limited operations. However, it must follow strict rules to protect existing communication networks.
Rollout Plan For Satellite Services
Under the license, the local unit can build four gateway stations. In addition, it can deploy up to 600,000 user terminals across the country.
Officials said the system must avoid interference with current radio networks. Therefore, the company must meet technical standards before expanding coverage. Starlink delivers high speed internet through thousands of low Earth orbit satellites. For example, it already serves remote regions in many countries worldwide.
Rural Areas Expected To Benefit
About 80 percent of Vietnam’s 100 million residents already use the internet. However, many rural and mountainous communities still lack stable connections. The government believes the new service can bridge that gap. As a result, schools, clinics, and small businesses may gain better digital access. The company’s website lists Vietnam as “coming soon” on its availability map. Meanwhile, the parent firm has not issued an official comment.
Trade Talks And Growth Outlook
The approval comes as Vietnam and the United States discuss a new trade deal. Last year, Washington imposed tariffs on several Vietnamese exports. Both sides held another round of talks this month. However, they have not yet reached a final agreement. Despite the tariffs, Vietnam’s economy grew by 8 percent last year. Now, the government aims for double digit growth in the coming year.
