STMicroelectronics Deploys Humanoid Robots in Chip Factories for the First Time

STMicroelectronics has partnered with Italian robotics company Oversonic Robotics to deploy humanoid robots across its semiconductor manufacturing sites worldwide. The collaboration marks a global first, as no semiconductor company has previously integrated humanoid robots into production and logistics operations.
The rollout has already begun. One RoBee humanoid robot is now operating at STMicroelectronics’ advanced packaging and testing facility in Malta. In addition, the company plans to introduce more units at other locations in the near future.

RoBee Brings AI-Powered Automation to Factories

RoBee is a cognitive humanoid robot designed to work alongside humans in complex environments. It can perform advanced tasks, interact with existing machinery, and adapt to changing factory conditions. As a result, STMicroelectronics expects improvements in efficiency, precision, and workplace safety.
Unlike traditional industrial robots, RoBee operates autonomously using artificial intelligence and real-time decision-making. It relies on advanced sensors to navigate factory floors, handle materials, and support logistics workflows. Therefore, it can integrate smoothly without major infrastructure changes.
Oversonic Robotics says RoBee is currently the only humanoid robot certified for both industrial and healthcare use. This certification highlights its high safety standards and flexibility across demanding environments.

A New Era for Semiconductor Manufacturing

The partnership reflects a broader shift toward smart automation in chip manufacturing. Semiconductor facilities face increasing complexity, labor shortages, and strict safety requirements. As a result, humanoid robots offer a promising solution for repetitive or high-risk tasks. STMicroelectronics believes this move will help future-proof its operations while supporting employees rather than replacing them. The company emphasizes that RoBee will assist human workers, allowing them to focus on higher-value responsibilities.
With this deployment, STMicroelectronics positions itself at the forefront of AI-driven manufacturing. The success of RoBee could influence how factories worldwide adopt humanoid robots in the years ahead.
