Storm Chandra Disrupts UK with Floods, School Closures, and Canceled Flights
The UK is grappling with major disruptions from Storm Chandra. This powerful weather system brought heavy rain and strong winds on Tuesday. It is the third major storm to hit the country this month.
Hundreds of schools have been forced to close, primarily in Northern Ireland. Travel chaos is widespread, with numerous flight cancellations and significant road closures. Consequently, authorities have issued multiple severe weather warnings.
Widespread Travel Disruption and Danger
Transport networks across the UK are severely affected. At Belfast City Airport, more than two dozen flights have been canceled. Train services are also experiencing widespread disruptions.
The road network is heavily impacted, especially in South West England. Key roads in Dorset, Somerset, and East Devon are closed due to flooding. A severe “danger to life” flood warning is active for Ottery St. Mary in Devon, warning of deep, fast-flowing water.
Official Warnings and Regional Impacts
The Met Office, the UK’s national weather service, issued the storm warning. It has declared an amber wind warning for Northern Ireland’s eastern coast. This is among eight active weather warnings currently in place across the nation.
Impacts vary by region. While rain and wind cause problems in the south, northern areas are seeing snow on higher ground. This mix of weather is creating hazardous conditions nationwide.
Residents are urged to avoid travel and follow official advice. The storm underscores a pattern of severe winter weather affecting the region this season.
