Streeting Warns: UK Flu Crisis Deepens as Hospital Cases Surge 50%

A major UK flu crisis deepens in the nation’s hospitals. Health Secretary Wes Streeting calls this a challenge. It is “unlike any” the NHS has seen since the pandemic. He wrote about this in The Times newspaper. Mr. Streeting stated the NHS is in a “precarious situation.” The number of flu patients in hospitals has surged. This rise is over 50% in just the last week. Officials warn the “super flu” is still not peaking.

A Threat to the System;

Next week, resident doctors plan a five-day strike. Mr. Streeting worries this strike could be the “Jenga piece.” He believes this could “collapse the tower.” For example, 2,660 patients were in hospital daily last week. This is equivalent to three full hospitals of flu patients. The patient count is the highest since records began in 2021. However, NHS medical director Chris Streather says the crisis is “nothing like the 2020 pandemic.” He urged experts to choose their language carefully.
Hospital admission rates are highest for two groups. These are people over 75 and children under five. The flu strain this year is H3N2. It has mutated, meaning we have less immunity. Schools in Scotland and Wales have reduced hours. They are bringing back measures like those used in the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, norovirus cases are also on the rise. Over 350 beds are occupied by people with the vomiting bug. The government offered a new deal to resident doctors. The BMA agreed to poll members on calling off the walkout. The results will be public on Monday. Mr. Streeting urges people to get the flu jab. This action offers vital protection.
