Sudan Army Withdraws from el-Fasher as RSF Seizes Control

The Sudan army withdrawal from its last western stronghold, el-Fasher, has been confirmed by military chief Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan. The move follows the Rapid Support Forces’ (RSF) announcement that it now controls the city.

Sudan Army Confirms el-Fasher Withdrawal

In a televised speech on Monday night, Gen Burhan said he approved the withdrawal due to “systematic destruction and killing of civilians.” He stated that the army’s decision aimed to prevent further suffering among the local population.
However, the situation remains dire. Residents who fled el-Fasher described scenes of chaos and fear. Many said they had lost contact with relatives still trapped in the city. Their stories paint a picture of desperation and uncertainty.

Fears Rise After RSF Takeover

Satellite images analyzed by Yale University’s Humanitarian Research Lab show evidence of a “mass killing” after the city’s fall. The lab said the imagery revealed widespread destruction and possible targeting of civilians.
Human rights groups have urged both sides to protect non-combatants. In addition, they called for international monitoring of the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Darfur.
El-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, had long been a symbolic and strategic location. Its loss marks a major shift in the balance of power between the army and the RSF.
As a result, observers fear the conflict could escalate further. Thousands have already been displaced, and aid agencies warn of worsening shortages of food, medicine, and shelter.
Gen Burhan reiterated his commitment to “preserving Sudan’s unity” despite recent setbacks. He appealed to the international community for support to end the violence and restore stability.
The Sudan army withdrawal has deepened fears of more civilian casualties as the conflict continues to tear through western Sudan.
