Tarique Rahman Leads BNP Into New Political Era
Two years ago, Sheikh Hasina won another election. Critics widely condemned that vote as rigged. Her 15-year grip on power seemed unshakeable. Few imagined her rule would end suddenly. Bangladesh politics often flips between two parties. Hasina’s Awami League and the BNP have alternated power for decades. Therefore, this shift follows a familiar pattern. However, something feels different this time.
A New Leader Takes Charge
Tarique Rahman now formally leads the BNP. This marks his first time contesting an election as party chief. His mother, Khaleda Zia, led the party for 40 years. She passed away late last year from illness. Khaleda took over after her husband’s assassination. Ziaur Rahman founded the BNP. He was also a key independence war leader. The party has deep historical roots.
Challenges Facing the New Chief
Rahman faces significant political baggage. Critics accused him of benefiting from nepotism. This happened when his mother held power. He also faced corruption allegations over the years. He recently returned to Bangladesh after 17 years. Rahman lived in self-imposed exile in London. He came back just five days before his mother died. Occasionally, he served as de-facto BNP chair. This happened when authorities jailed his mother. He also stepped in during her illness. However, many view him as an untested leader. Therefore, his political future remains uncertain.
