Minneapolis, August 27, 2025 — A tragic act of violence unfolded Wednesday morning when a gunman opened fire through the stained-glass windows of Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis during a back-to-school Mass, killing two children and injuring 17 others.

Authorities identified the shooter as 23-year-old Robin Westman, who later died by suicide behind the church. Police said the attacker used multiple firearms — including a rifle, shotgun, and pistol — to fire into pews where children and elderly parishioners were seated. Fourteen of the injured were children, and three were elderly worshippers. Officials confirmed that all surviving victims are expected to recover.

“This was a deliberate act of violence against innocent children and worshipers,” said Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara during a press briefing. The FBI has joined the investigation, treating the incident as both a hate crime and an act of domestic terrorism targeting Catholics.

Community leaders expressed grief and called for unity. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey urged against scapegoating, warning: “Anybody who uses this as an opportunity to villainize others has lost their sense of humanity.” Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and President Donald Trump both offered condolences, while U.S. flags will be flown at half-staff. Pope Leo XIV also issued a statement of solidarity through the Vatican.

The attack marks one of the deadliest acts of violence against a place of worship in recent years and comes amid growing concerns over gun violence in schools and religious spaces. Investigators are reviewing a manifesto and online videos linked to the suspect, who legally purchased all weapons used in the attack.
