UK Enforces Digital Permission to Travel: ETA Now Mandatory for 85 Countries
A major change to UK entry rules took effect today. From February 25, 2026, non-visa nationals must have digital permission to travel. This means an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is now mandatory for visitors from 85 countries.
Airlines will prevent passengers from boarding without valid documentation. This includes an ETA, eVisa, or other approved permits. The rule applies even to those taking connecting flights through UK airports.
The affected nationalities include the United States, Canada, and France. British and Irish citizens, including dual nationals, remain exempt. They must present a valid British passport or Certificate of Entitlement.
What Is the ETA?
The ETA is a digital travel permit linked to your passport. It costs £16 and permits multiple journeys. The authorization lasts for two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.
The fee is competitive internationally. It compares to the US ESTA at $40 and the upcoming EU ETIAS at €20. Applications are made through the UK ETA app.
The process is quick and straightforward. Applicants provide biographic and biometric details. They answer questions on suitability and criminality. Most receive a decision automatically within minutes.
Why the Change?
Minister for Migration and Citizenship Mike Tapp explained the rationale. “The ETA scheme is a vital part of our work to strengthen the UK’s border security,” he said. It delivers a more efficient and modern service for visitors and the British public.
The scheme helps keep the border secure. It prevents individuals who pose a threat from entering the UK. It also paves the way for a contactless UK border in the future.
Since its introduction in October 2023, over 19 million visitors have successfully applied. As of January 2026, the scheme has generated over £383 million in revenue. This money is reinvested in improving the border and immigration system.
Practical Advice for Travelers
The government recommends planning ahead. While most applications are approved in minutes, travelers should allow up to three working days. This accounts for the small number of cases requiring additional review.
eVisa holders need to keep their UK Visas and Immigration account updated. This includes those with EU Settlement Scheme status. Your passport details must match your digital record to avoid travel disruption.
From February 26, Certificates of Entitlement will be issued in digital format. This means a certificate only needs to be applied for once. It no longer expires with your passport.
The message is clear. Check your documentation before traveling. Ensure you have the right permission. Your journey will be much smoother.
