UK Evacuation from Jamaica Completed After Hurricane Melissa
A government-chartered flight was arranged to evacuate British nationals from Jamaica after Hurricane Melissa. The plane landed at London’s Gatwick Airport on Sunday morning.
UK Support and Humanitarian Aid
The flight was operated from Kingston’s Norman Manley International Airport on Saturday. It was organized under the UK’s £7.5 million regional emergency plan. This package was created to help recovery efforts and provide relief to affected citizens.
Up to £1 million in public donations will be matched by the UK government. Additional support has been given to the International Red Cross and Red Crescent. Contributions were made by King Charles and Queen Camilla to express national solidarity.
Challenges in Distribution
Despite international aid, deliveries have been delayed by blocked roads and damaged infrastructure. The movement of food, water, and medical supplies has been hindered. Local authorities and relief workers are being assisted in reaching isolated areas.
At least 28 people have been confirmed dead, and thousands remain displaced after Hurricane Melissa. Power outages and communication breakdowns have been reported across the island. The evacuation was seen as part of the UK’s broader humanitarian response.
Further assistance has been promised by the UK government as recovery continues. British nationals still in Jamaica have been advised to contact the High Commission for help.
