UK Plans Danish-Style Immigration Reforms, Says Home Secretary

The UK government is preparing a major overhaul of immigration and asylum laws, the BBC has learned. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is expected to reveal the UK immigration reforms later this month.
UK Plans Danish-Style Immigration Reforms, Says Home Secretary
She plans to model several measures on Denmark’s tough immigration system, known as one of the strictest in Europe.

Inspired by Denmark’s Approach

According to officials, the Home Office is studying Denmark’s rules on family reunification and temporary refugee stays. These changes aim to discourage people from coming to the UK without valid reasons.
In addition, Mahmood wants to make it easier to remove individuals who have no legal right to remain. Her plan also focuses on cutting incentives that attract people to the UK in the first place.
However, the proposal has sparked debate within the Labour Party. Some members believe the Danish model is too harsh. One left-wing Labour MP even described it as “too hardcore” and said it carries echoes of far-right policies.

Balancing Fairness and Control

Mahmood argues that reforming the system is necessary to restore public trust and maintain fairness. Therefore, the new framework is likely to focus on stronger enforcement and clearer migration routes.
For example, officials are considering more efficient asylum processing and improved border management. As a result, the government hopes to strike a balance between compassion and control.
The upcoming announcement is expected to be one of Mahmood’s biggest policy moves since taking office.
