UK Rejoins Erasmus Study Scheme in 2027
The UK has confirmed its UK Erasmus study return from 2027. This decision comes six years after the country ended participation following Brexit. Students and universities across the UK have welcomed the move.
UK Confirms Return to Erasmus
Under the renewed scheme, British students can study at European universities for one year. They will not pay extra tuition fees during their placements. In return, European students can also study in the UK under the same terms.
This change brings back a popular exchange option for young people. Many students value the cultural and academic experience. As a result, universities expect strong interest once the scheme restarts.
Funding Deal and EU Partnership
The UK previously replaced Erasmus with the Turing scheme in 2021. The Turing programme supports global placements outside Europe. However, it does not fund incoming students.
Under the new agreement, the UK will join an expanded Erasmus+ programme. The government will pay £570 million to participate from 2027. Officials say this represents a 30 percent discount on standard costs.
Minister Nick Thomas-Symonds described the deal as a success. He said it shows the government’s renewed partnership with the EU is working. In addition, he highlighted the benefits for students and higher education institutions.
The Erasmus+ programme supports study, training, and youth exchanges. It also encourages collaboration between universities. Therefore, experts believe the return will strengthen academic ties and international cooperation.
