Von der Leyen Warns of Volatile Ukraine Conflict as Peace Talks Stall

European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen has called the situation in Ukraine both volatile and dangerous. She said the conflict needs careful handling, as Russia shows no real intent to join meaningful peace talks. Therefore, she urged Europe to stay alert and united.

Von der Leyen Warns of Volatile Ukraine Conflict

Her remarks came shortly before Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov responded. He said it was too early to discuss any peace deal. His comments added to rising concern about the direction of the war. In addition, they highlighted the wide gap between both sides.
Von der Leyen stressed the need for strong security guarantees for Ukraine. She said these guarantees must deter future attacks. For example, she argued that Europe cannot allow Russia to impose pressure through fear or force. As a result, she asked EU members to enhance long-term support for Kyiv.

Europe Calls for Stronger Security Commitments

The Commission chief said Russia still holds a post-World War Two mindset. According to her, Moscow views Europe as a sphere of influence. However, she insisted that the continent must reject this view. She explained that every nation deserves the freedom to choose its own path.
Von der Leyen addressed the European Parliament in Strasbourg. The session took place as the United States increased its efforts to mediate a deal between Kyiv and Moscow. However, she warned that progress remains slow. Diplomats say both sides maintain firm positions, so talks require patience.
She added that the European Union must continue helping Ukraine strengthen its defence. In her view, lasting peace must come with solid security arrangements. The volatile Ukraine conflict shows no signs of easing soon. Therefore, she urged leaders to remain committed and prepared for the challenges ahead.
