Wikivoyage: A Free Guide to Change How We Plan Travel
Wikivoyage is a free, collaborative travel guide. It is a lesser-known Wikimedia project founded in 2013. The guide offers neutral, non-promotional information written by travelers.
It aims to provide practical trip-planning details. This includes destinations, itineraries, and travel tips. All content is free from commercial interests.
Recent Efforts to Revive the Project
Recent initiatives have boosted the Spanish Wikivoyage community. The “Capital Cities Challenge 2025” created 28 new articles. Another project, “Wikivoyage Loves Venezuela,” led to 39 new articles.
These efforts show thematic activities work well. They help revitalize the project and fill content gaps. As a result, the number of articles has grown from 3,014 in 2022 to 3,631 in early 2026.
A Human Alternative in a Digital Age
Wikivoyage stands against trends like sponsored influencer content. It also avoids “AI slop,” or low-quality AI-generated text common on travel sites. The guide offers clear, experience-based information.
Editing is easier than on Wikipedia, as references are not mandatory. This allows for more agile updates. The project relies on community contributions to grow.
