China has lost access to the U.S. seafood market due to increased duties, and industry sources suggest Beijing may now rely on Pakistan to route exports. Meanwhile, Pakistan has secured a four-year extension to export seafood to the U.S., Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry announced.
The extension follows the U.S. NOAA’s classification of Pakistani fisheries as “comparable” under the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA), confirming that the country meets American standards for marine mammal protection during fishing. “This decision reflects international recognition of the quality of Pakistan’s seafood,” Chaudhry said.
Pakistan exported over 242,000 metric tons of seafood worth $489.2 million in FY25. With U.S. market access and compliance recognition, the same volume could earn $600 million. The minister highlighted the importance of continued sustainable practices and stricter marine protection measures, as recommended by NOAA, to ensure long-term success and potential expansion into the European and Gulf markets.
