Hytale RPG Returns to Hypixel Studio After Riot Games Transfer

Hytale RPG project has returned to Hypixel Studio following a remarkable transaction with Riot Games. This unexpected Hytale RPG project revival comes five months after Riot closed Hypixel Studios and halted development. Founder Simon Collins-Laflamme announced “We did it. Hytale is saved. We have acquired Hytale from Riot Games” in an emotional statement. The development team immediately began working toward an accelerated launch schedule, acknowledging the game currently contains numerous rough edges and imperfections.

Development History and Community Response

The RPG project originally began development in 2015 before Riot Games acquired Hypixel Studios in 2020. The acquisition initially promised expanded resources but ultimately led to the studio’s closure in June 2025. Riot Games cited inability to “bring Hytale to life in a way that truly delivered on its promise” as justification for the shutdown. However, overwhelming community disappointment prompted negotiations that returned the IP to its original creators.
Hypixel Studios rehired over 30 developers and reestablished independence to continue Hytale development. The team switched to Legacy Engine, confirming a playable version exists with over 100 NPCs and thousands of items. Collins-Laflamme admitted “It’s messy. It’s janky. And there’s a lot of work to be done” but committed to releasing the game rapidly rather than pursuing perfection.

Future Plans and Development Approach

Hytale RPG project will prioritize core mechanics, sandbox experiences, and modding support upon release. Adventure Mode and mini-games remain in development but won’t delay the initial launch. The studio operates completely independently with self-funded development secured for ten years. This financial stability allows careful, community-focused development without external pressure from publishers or investors.
The development team emphasizes their small size enables rapid decision-making and efficient progress. They acknowledge balancing and polishing all content will require time but promise regular updates and community involvement throughout development. No specific release date has been announced, but early access appears imminent based on development updates and community communications.
