How Meta Confirms User Ages
When Meta mistakenly flags a user aged 16 or older as under 16, the person must confirm their age. They can choose from two options. They may use facial age assurance, which asks for a quick video selfie. Or they can upload a government ID through Yoti’s age-assurance technology. Both methods aim to offer reliable results with minimal data sharing. Meta says this approach remains the least intrusive way to estimate age.
Verification Needed for Age Changes
In addition, teens who try to change their account age from under 16 to over 16 must verify their age. Therefore, the company expects some errors. Meta already saw similar issues during its earlier age-assurance trial. However, it believes the system will improve with wider use.
Registration Issues in Australia
Meta also confirmed it is investigating a separate issue in Australia. Some users who entered their age as under 16 could not register new Instagram accounts. The company said this problem is unrelated to the changes announced this week.

Even while complying with new regulations, Meta argues that its teen-account settings offer a better alternative than a full ban. These settings limit who can contact teens, restrict ads, and support parental controls.
