Cybersecurity Awareness Boosts Students’ Online Safety, Study Finds

A new study examined how cybersecurity awareness shapes protective behaviors among Saudi secondary school students. It also explored how cyber threat perception acts as a bridge between awareness and action. In addition, researchers looked at whether the amount of daily internet use strengthens this relationship.
The study took place in 2024 with a diverse group of 1,980 students from different regions of Saudi Arabia. Researchers used a multi-stage sampling method and a multi-center approach to ensure inclusiveness. They also designed and validated the study tools to align with the local cultural context. As a result, the findings offer a clear picture of student behavior in today’s digital world.

Key Findings and Their Impact

The results showed that cybersecurity awareness positively influenced students’ cyber threat perception. Internet usage duration also played a major role, and both

factors combined to shape how students view online risks. In turn, cyber threat perception strongly predicted students’ protective behaviors.
The study confirmed that cyber threat perception acts as a mediator. Therefore, students first need to understand threats before they take action. The findings also revealed a moderating effect. Students who spend more time online showed stronger links between awareness, perception, and protection. As a result, increased internet exposure made awareness training more effective.
These insights highlight the need for more interactive digital-safety programs in schools. For example, threat simulations, hands-on exercises, and guided practice help students understand real scenarios. In addition, targeted support for heavy internet users can improve outcomes. Schools can strengthen this by offering workshops and encouraging teacher-parent collaboration.
Together, these actions will help students build safer online habits and protect their data in everyday life.
