North Korea Makes Russian Mandatory as Ties With Moscow Deepen

North Korea has decided to make Russian mandatory in schools. A senior Russian official shared the update on Thursday. His comments come as both countries strengthen ties while facing increased isolation from the West.
Alexander Kozlov, Russia’s Natural Resources and Environment Minister, said that Russian mandatory in DPRK classrooms would begin from the fourth grade. He referred to North Korea by its official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. According to him, the move reflects deeper cooperation between

Moscow and Pyongyang.

Growing Interest in Russian Language and Study Opportunities
Kozlov also serves on an intergovernmental commission formed by both nations. He explained that Russian remains one of the most popular foreign languages in North Korea. At present, around 600 students study Russian across the country. As a result, officials expect interest to grow even faster in the coming years.
In addition, the minister noted that 96 North Korean students enrolled in Russian universities last academic year. These numbers suggest expanding educational links between the two countries. Many analysts believe this could influence future workforce development and cultural exchanges.

No Confirmation Yet From North Korean Authorities

However, North Korea has not yet confirmed Kozlov’s statement. It also remains unclear when the new language requirement will fully take effect. Observers say that Pyongyang usually introduces curriculum changes gradually. Therefore, more information may surface in the coming months.
The announcement highlights the broader shift in North Korea’s diplomatic outreach. The country continues to deepen cooperation with Russia in several sectors. Many experts view the language policy as another sign of strengthening political and educational alignment.
