MSU Student-Teachers Set Record edTPA Scores in Historic Achievement

Morehead State University’s Volgenau College of Education is celebrating a major milestone this semester. Student-teachers achieved record edTPA scores, marking the highest results ever earned within the college. The achievement reflects years of focused preparation and growing academic strength.
The Educative Teacher Performance Assessment, known as edTPA, is a national measure of teaching readiness. It asks candidates to plan lessons, deliver instruction, and assess real classroom learning. In addition, they must submit a subject-specific portfolio that demonstrates strong instructional decisions.
This semester’s group exceeded expectations. Their performance raised the college’s overall average score to its highest point in history. As a result, the improvement shows a nearly 10% increase since the edTPA was first introduced.

A Reflection of Strong Preparation and Partnerships

Dr. Nicola Mason, dean of the college, highlighted the importance of the achievement. She noted that school districts consistently praise MSU graduates. She added that high scores show only one part of student success. According to her, dedicated faculty and staff help candidates develop a wide range of professional skills.
The edTPA process is detailed and demanding. Candidates must create a multi-day teaching segment, record live classroom instruction, and analyze student learning. They also provide written commentary to explain their teaching choices. These requirements align with national benchmarks for effective teaching. Therefore, strong scores reflect advanced preparation.
This milestone also celebrates MSU’s partnerships with regional P–12 schools. These schools support student-teachers through clinical experiences and mentorship. Their guidance helps candidates grow with confidence and skill.
Dr. Alicia N. Day, coordinator of clinical and field experiences, praised the group’s achievement. She shared that the students moved beyond previous progress and reached “record territory.” She also expressed pride in their professionalism and dedication.
