A New Directory Offers Afghan Women Hope After University Ban

For three years, Afghan women have faced a closed door to universities. However, a new initiative now offers them a map to other paths. The Alliance for the Education of Women in Afghanistan (AEWA) has launched a public Afghan women education directory.
This tool helps women find alternative learning options. It connects them directly with independent education providers. These programs cover a wide range of subjects and levels.

Bridging the Educational Gap

The Taliban banned women from universities in December 2022. This move sparked global condemnation. It also severely limited futures for millions.
In response, many online schools and programs emerged. They work to fill the massive educational gap. The new directory makes these vital resources easy to find.
“Our goal is to promote discoverability,” said Dr. Victoria Fontan, a co-founder of AEWA. She noted that hundreds of initiatives now operate despite restrictions. Therefore, women can still access quality education.

A Global Network of Support

AEWA is a global network founded in 2022. It brings together over 100 organizations. These include universities, NGOs, and vocational trainers.
The directory is its first public listing of members. It complements other resources like a crowdsourced opportunity database. The alliance estimates its members reach at least 900,000 women and girls.
In addition to the directory, AEWA has created Learning Quality Standards. These standards promote accountability and ethical operations. They ensure programs meet important quality benchmarks.

Looking Forward

The Taliban’s restrictions on women are severe and sweeping. They bar women from most employment and public spaces. As a result, informal education is one of the few options left.
This new directory provides crucial hope and practical help. It empowers women to take control of their learning. The global community continues to stand with Afghan women.
The Afghan women education directory is more than a list. It is a lifeline to knowledge and opportunity. It proves that the quest for education cannot be extinguished.
