Brunei–China Academic Ties Strengthen Regional Cooperation Vision

Brunei China academic ties are gaining renewed attention in Southeast Asia. Dr. Hazri Kifle, Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Brunei Darussalam, recently shared this vision at an international forum in China. He spoke after attending the Southeast Asia Forum 2025 in Guangzhou. The event took place at South China Normal University. Dr. Kifle stressed Brunei’s role within ASEAN and the Greater Bay Area. However, he admitted Brunei still needs greater visibility. Its small size often limits recognition, especially among young people in China. Therefore, academic exchange can help build stronger awareness and trust.

Education as a Bridge Between Nations

Dr. Kifle described collaboration as a two-way opportunity. He encouraged Bruneian students and researchers to learn from China’s progress. For example, China leads in engineering, artificial intelligence, and digital innovation. At the same time, Brunei offers valuable expertise. Biodiversity research stands out as a key strength. Its rainforests hold rich potential for scientific discovery and pharmaceutical development. In addition, Islamic finance presents growing academic interest. Many international students, including those from China, now explore this field. As a result, Brunei can share specialized knowledge while expanding cultural exchange. Existing partnerships already include student exchanges with Hong Kong. Joint research projects with Chinese universities are also active. However, Dr. Kifle noted that Chinese student numbers in Brunei remain low. He hopes to welcome hundreds of Chinese students in the future. These learners could join undergraduate, master’s, and PhD programs. He believes their discipline and curiosity would enrich campus culture. Beyond education, cooperation supports economic growth. China and Brunei continue to expand trade and investment ties. Ultimately, academic links can help attract industries and create shared development.
