Orange County STEM Educators Honored for Inspiring Future Innovators

Orange County STEM educators continue to shape future innovators. Two high school teachers recently earned major recognition for their dedication and impact. Daniel Pilchman and Al Rabanera received the 2025 Outstanding STEM Educator Awards. The Orange County Department of Education presented the honors. Cox Communications and UC Irvine partnered in the initiative.Both educators are Cal State Fullerton alumni. Their work highlights the power of engaging and inclusive STEM education.

Hands-On Learning and Human-Centered Math

Daniel Pilchman teaches manufacturing and product design at Woodbridge High School in Irvine. He received the Outstanding Career Awareness Educator Award. His classes focus on building real-world skills through hands-on projects.Students learn by creating items such as electric guitars. As a result, they gain confidence and practical experience. Pilchman also promotes project-based learning and strong community connections.He credits teamwork across his district for the program’s success. In addition, he emphasizes the value of preparing students for college and careers. Pilchman holds a doctorate from UC Irvine and continues his studies at Cal State Fullerton. Al Rabanera teaches math at La Vista High School in Fullerton. He earned the Outstanding K-12 STEM Educator Award. His approach helps students connect algebra to everyday life.Rabanera believes STEM should feel personal and empowering. Therefore, he focuses on helping students see themselves as capable problem-solvers. This recognition reflects his 22 years of service in education.He holds a doctorate from USC and leads his school’s math department. Previously, he earned district and university honors for his leadership.Together, these educators demonstrate how STEM learning can inspire, support, and prepare students for the future.
