WhatsApp Adds a New High-Security Feature

WhatsApp has launched WhatsApp Strict Account Settings to improve user safety. The feature gives stronger protection against hacking and digital surveillance.
Meta announced the update on Tuesday. As a result, WhatsApp joins other tech firms offering optional high-security modes. The setting works with one tap inside the app. However, it limits some features to improve overall security.

How Strict Account Settings Protect Users

The new mode blocks media and files from unknown senders. In addition, it disables link previews in chats. The feature also silences calls from contacts you do not know. For example, this helps reduce spyware and tracking risks. WhatsApp said the tool helps people facing advanced cyber threats. These include journalists, activists, and public-facing professionals.Although chats already use end-to-end encryption, risks still exist. Therefore, the company added extra safeguards for high-risk users.

Tech Industry Moves Toward Stronger Security

WhatsApp is now the third major tech firm to add such protection.Apple introduced Lockdown Mode in 2022 for iPhone and Mac users. Google followed with Android’s Advanced Protection Mode last year. Both options trade convenience for better digital safety. Cybersecurity experts welcomed WhatsApp’s move. As a result, pressure may grow on other platforms to improve security.
