TikTok Confirms App Issues After Data Center Outage

TikTok released an update after users reported app problems. The company said a power outage caused the disruption. The issue affected a U.S. data center. As a result, some users saw slower load times and lower engagement. Problems appeared on Sunday and Monday. However, TikTok said recovery efforts began quickly. The outage followed severe winter weather across the U.S. Millions experienced power failures during the same period.

What Users Experienced During the Outage

Many users reported bugs and delayed loading. In addition, the “For You” page failed to refresh. Downdetector reports spiked early Sunday morning. Within one day, users submitted over 585,000 outage complaints. Some creators noticed videos showing zero views. TikTok said this was a display error, not data loss. The company assured users that engagement data remained safe. However, posting new content still caused issues for some users.

Censorship Concerns Surface Online

During the outage, users raised concerns about missing news content. Some believed political videos were being limited. These claims spread widely on social media. As a result, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced a review. TikTok did not confirm any censorship. Later, political content appeared to return to normal.
