Pakistan 5G Spectrum Auction Begins Tomorrow With 600 MHz Up for Bidding

Pakistan 5G Spectrum Auction Begins Tomorrow With 600 MHz Up for Bidding

Pakistan will begin the Pakistan 5G auction tomorrow as the government prepares its largest spectrum release. Officials plan to auction 600 MHz of spectrum nationwide to improve internet services.
During a media briefing, Shaza Fatima Khawaja said Pakistan has operated on only 274 MHz spectrum since 1987. Therefore, the new auction aims to expand network capacity and improve digital connectivity. Moreover, the auction will run through specialized software. Authorities will broadcast the process live to ensure transparency.

Auction Process and Network Expansion

Officials from Pakistan Telecommunication Authority explained that six spectrum bands will be offered. These include 2300 MHz and 2600 MHz, which support both 4G and 5G services. In addition, telecom companies must bid for 2600 MHz and 3500 MHz bands. The 3500 MHz band will mainly support 5G services.
According to Aamir Shehzad, Pakistan currently has the lowest spectrum availability in the region. As a result, expanding spectrum could significantly improve mobile performance. Currently, Pakistan has around 59,000 telecom sites. However, quality issues still appear in many areas. Therefore, the government created a nine-year rollout plan. Under this plan, telecom operators will add 3,000 new sites every year. Initially, 5G services may deliver speeds of around 50 Mbps.

Goals Behind the Pakistan 5G Auction

Authorities say the goal is not just revenue. Instead, the focus is better connectivity for citizens.
The chairman of Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, Hafeez Ur Rehman, said telecom companies already tested the auction system. Importantly, none raised technical concerns. He also assured users that mobile packages will not become more expensive after 5G launches.
Meanwhile, officials stressed that internet access now supports economic growth, security, and daily life. Finally, the government believes expanding spectrum will strengthen Pakistan’s digital future.
