Education International Solidarity Call Urges Ceasefire Amid Middle East War
An education solidarity webinar united global voices to support teachers and students affected by the Middle East war. Education International led the session with union leaders from conflict-hit regions. Therefore, participants urged an immediate ceasefire and stronger protection for schools. In addition, they stressed the need to defend children’s right to education.
Voices from Conflict Zones
Union leaders shared firsthand accounts of violence and disruption. Educators from Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Palestine, and Syria described daily struggles. For example, schools face destruction, while families deal with displacement and economic crisis. As a result, learning continues under extreme pressure.
Mugwena Maluleke said unions choose peace and stand for children’s safety. He added that similar crises appear in regions like Sudan and Ukraine. Therefore, the issue reflects a wider global pattern affecting education systems.
Growing Crisis in Education Systems
The conflict escalated after the February 2026 Middle East escalation, followed by retaliation across the region. Consequently, universities and schools suffered heavy damage. Millions now face displacement, inflation, and power shortages.
In Lebanon, many schools now serve as shelters. Meanwhile, online learning struggles due to weak infrastructure. In addition, teachers face salary delays and financial instability. This situation makes it harder to continue teaching.
Union leaders warned that education systems are close to collapse. They highlighted attacks on schools and shrinking education budgets. Moreover, restrictions on union rights add further pressure.
In conclusion, the education solidarity webinar delivered a clear message. Leaders called for an immediate ceasefire and global action. Without urgent steps, the crisis will continue to harm students, teachers, and future generations.
